I got the impression that Abbadon and his servants could only create portals to places Abbadons "tendrils" had reached.

The reason why it didn't occur sooner was that it took time for Abbadon to dig his tendrils "free". So Abbadon dug his way out. But now at time of Nightfall and the defilement of tomb of Primordial Kings,

Abaddon and his minions created portals *during Nightfall campaign* via the Shadow Nexus. However, his minions (at least three) used portals prior. How else could the demonic Terrick and demonic fortune teller and the Titan that showed up at the Charr (and possibly, but unlikely, a second Titan - if the one that the Burnt Legion did not find was not Screvio (sp?))?

Also, as the Realm of Torment and Tyria are not on the same plane of existence (nor is the Realm of Torment underneath Tyria *despite the hole-like portal in the Mouth of Torment*), so there would be no literal "digging" for the tendrils. In order to get to other realms, Abaddon's influence had to be via portals and the rituals done by Varesh - which were weakening the barrier between Tyria and the Realm of Torment *i.e., portal-like creation spells - as in the first, demons come through temporary portals, and in the second, there are three portals which can be easily closed*.

Update - Thursday, January 19 2006

Attention citizens.

The Tomb of the Primeval Kings has been overrun by the enemies of Balthazar. The Zaishen Order recognizes that many of you may wish to help conquer this foe. While this is admirable, only those truly devoted to the teachings of Balthazar should attempt to enter the Tombs.

Those wishing to become as great as we, the Zaishen, should take heart. Members of our order await your arrival at the Great Temple of Balthazar. We will train you in the ways of war, so you may continue the personal squabbles that seem to consume so much of your daily routine.

If you truly wish to better yourself, take the ship to the Great Temple, and hone your skills with the Zaishen.

May the blessings of Balthazar follow you on your journey.

-Commander Kuro of the Zaishen Order
Way before Nighfall. And Abbadons tendrils are there,

later on Torment Claws are always near the portals. at attacks spots, or you can see tendrils in the landscape

The attacks of Abbodon and his servants was always after you saw those tendrils.

But there are free agents, that could do deeds to assist.
The Lich wielding the scepter of Orr opened portals (for Titans) (he ended up in realm of torment), it probably thanks to him that Abbadon could become free.

Kanaxai, another example.

Another clearifying point. In Dzagonur Bastion, the Torment Claws came after the mission - when they said "Nightfall has come"

Before then, Torment Claws have only shown at Lion's Arch, Kaineng Center, and Kamadan. However, at other portals, those don't show. And after Nightfall, they do show wherever - but the barrier is already breaking/broken then. So Abaddon's tendrils were dependent on portals.

Khilbron didn't really open any portals - he just had us unblocked one which got sealed almost right away. Though if the Door of Komalie stayed open, it probably would have helped Abaddon break free.

The only portals that were open long enough were the ones by Odran.

As for Kanaxai, go to the study on Oni thread, there we have stated how Kanaxai has no known connection (though a possible, tedious, one to Menzies) to Abaddon, Dhuum, and Menzies.

Technically speaking, yes he did. Although, indirectly, as he ordered the Portal Wraiths to open portals to Lion's Arch, Droknar's Forge, Ascalon City, and the Henge of Denravi.

Use tedious in a Sentence
–adjective
1. marked by tedium; long and tiresome: tedious tasks; a tedious journey.
2. wordy so as to cause weariness or boredom, as a speaker or writer; prolix.

I'm still pretty sure you just mean tenuous.

Those are not quite the same kind of portals. At least that I mean. I am talking about portals that go from the Realm of Torment to Tyria. I think Roupe is too since the topic is about Abaddon getting access to Tyria.

Those portals are Tyria to Tyria and are not of the subject matter, to be honest. Just like the portals in the Gate of Madness mission - except those are Realm of Torment to Realm of Torment instead of Tyria to Tyria.

Right, then let's just start calling those shadow portals.

How exactly Odran died isn't really relevant - however, the fact that Abaddon's influence started being felt within a few decades (the Fortune Teller, the Titan found by the Charr) of some mage opening a bunch of portals between Tyria and various places in the Mists is very suggestive - consider just how many things in the GW timeline happened 'two hundred years ago'. Remember that all the references to Odran's story we have come from a period of time when knowledge of Abaddon was still suppressed and, thus, any connection between his death and Abaddon would also be suppressed.

For instance, one question that has to be asked is... what was really the motive of the spirits for destroying Odran? The story in the Prophecies Manuscripts basically reads like a morality tale about not going where you aren't supposed to be, but the spirits don't seem to be particularly hostile to mortals now. It's not impossible that Odran's real crime was in breaching the Realm of Torment, and the story we're given of his death was circulated in order to discourage anyone else from blundering into the Realm without revealing just what the gods (and possibly the spirits) were worried about.
